How does a Seagull survive in winter?
ANSWER: Many Seagulls MIGRATE.
Like the Bald Eagle, many Seagulls must migrate south to find food to eat. Although many species are live in Illinois year-round, some species migrate to free-flowing water in order to catch fish. Some Seagulls even move to areas with lots of people in order to scavenge garbage! This young Herring Gull photographed by Mrs. Burns was enjoying lunch on the Fox River in January 2013.
Ask and Answer:
- Why do you think many Seagulls need to live near or on water to survive?
- Do you ever see Seagulls where you live? Are they always near water? Where else do you see Seagulls?
